Artist Statement
Practicing Artist at The University of Lincoln
Shape, colour and form is a specific focus in my art practice. Through the use of simplified form I create paintings of cosmetic items that have minimal details, removing the importance of the brand. The paintings depict clusters of tubes and pots; this quantity is more important to me than the products appearance. The palette in my work is inspired by the colours used on the beauty packaging, pastel pinks contrasting with warm orange tones, for instance.

My painting style is heavily influenced by aspects of Pop Art such as the black outlines and block colours. Andy Warhol is an influence because of his simplistic style and bold colour choices.

Consumerism is a vital part of my practice as I aim to demonstrate my own behaviour on this front. This is shown through my paintings of beauty products that I own. By doing this I am able to showcase the extent of my consumeristic behaviour. I perform a recuperated role rather than a critical one.

Theodor Adorno, philosopher, created the term ‘culture industry’ which he used to describe how the public had become docile. Adorno stated “the culture industry’s ideology is such that conformity has replaced consciousness” (Adorno, 1991, 104). As a consumer I believe that I am heavily influenced by those around me.
